Why Me?

This is not a “woe is me” post. It’s meant to answer the question: “Why should I ask M Pepper Langlinais/Amanda Innes to speak at my writing conference or convention?” After all, though I’ve had some books that have done well, I’m not exactly a household name. Most writing events look for recognizable books, authors, editors, agents, etc. And that’s part of the draw, BUT… I’d argue it’s not the whole picture.

Aspiring writers want to see success stories, true. But those big names also seem out of reach in a way. Not entirely relatable. Which is where someone like me comes in. I’ve gotten further than many: produced plays, a produced film short that went to a festival, an award-winning short script that had a table read at Sundance, and a few books that have sold more than the typical indie title. I’ve been moderately successful. I’ve worked on film sets and in publishing, so I understand these industries. I’ve done theatre, too (acting and teaching). I’ve had books published by small imprints and I’ve also self-published. My experience is wide ranging yet also accessible to those just getting started.

Also, I love chatting with people. Rather than being some big name afraid of being mobbed and therefore hiding in back rooms, I’m happy to be out and mixing (within reason). I can be a presence at an event rather than a fleeting glimpse.

I’m happiest on panels, but I can speak on a variety of topics and also moderate panels. And I have a natural knack for stepping in to help when needed. Which is why having me on your team can be a huge benefit.
